As Jesus served the last supper, He said "This do in remembrance of Me." See Luke 22:19-20. There are things we must not forget - things that will change our lives forever and establish a pattern of thinking and behavior throughout our lives (Philippians 2:1-16). We must rehearse these things with each other and maintain priorities and motives for all we do (Ephesians 3:14-21; Colossians 2:6-8). Observing the Lord's table is an act of proclaiming / preaching the gospel to others (I Corinthians 11:23-26 - vs. 26 cp. translations).
What are we remembering? What is significant about the death burial and resurrection of Christ? How should this affect us, affect others, and affect the world?
The sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross and His resurrection from the dead show us that He came to…
Demonstrate God's goodness and love - Matthew 26:30. A hymn / psalm was sung. Psalm 113 - 118 were typically used during the Passover. They possibly sang Psalm 118 - a very messianic psalm. Though things were about to become very difficult, things were in order according to God's plan. The Scriptures were being fulfilled (Matthew 26:51-54; Luke 24:44-47 cp. Psalm 40:6-8; Hebrews 10:1-10). The Scriptures were being used to keep focused on the goodness, faithfulness, and love of God. Jesus led them into patient love and devotion for God. See Luke 22:14-15; John 13:1-3, 4-17; 1:14; 14:1-3,6,9; 15:9-13; Matthew 26:51-54; Romans 5:6-8).
Deliver us from sin and deliver us to God - Matthew 26:26-28 (Remission of sins).
- Colossians 3:13 (Christ Redeemed us from the curse of the law)
- II Corinthians 5:17-21 (Reconciled us to God cp. Romans 5:9-11)
- See also I Peter 3:18; John 14:6.
Destroy the works of the devil - Matthew 26:14-16. See Matthew 26:1-2, 3-6, 24, 47-54 (cp. Luke 22:1-6, 21-24). See also I Corinthians 2:7-8; Colossians 2:13-15; Hebrews 2:14-15; I John 3:8. Satan inspired treachery which would lead to the crucifixion. Yet he also tried to diminish the significance of Christ's death and to cause the disciples to prevent it (Matthew 16:21-23; Luke 22:31-24).
Develop a kingdom in which we can know and serve the Father - Matthew 26:29. See Matthew 26:13; 24:14 (cp. Luke 22:18, 29-30 - millennial kingdom; I Corinthians 15:19-28 - eternal, heavenly kingdom).
Note: There is a spiritual gospel kingdom now (John 3:3; Romans 14:17-19, I Corinthians 4:19-20; Colossians 1:12-14). Are you in this kingdom? |
