Isaiah compels us to question what we are doing. There is a need / a thirst / a hunger in our lives that we want to satisfy. Many people are doing things to try and find satisfaction. But those things are temporal and vain: wealth, possessions, status, pleasure, beauty, health, and long life (Proverbs 23:4-5; Haggai 1:5-6). What matters most is that you seek the Lord and know Him personally (Isaiah 55:6; Jeremiah 9:23-24; John 6:26-29; I Timothy 6:6-11, 17-19; II Timothy 2:22; I John 2:15-17).
We are using the following outline of Isaiah 55:
Isaiah 55:1-2 - The Call to Priorities
Isaiah 55:3-5 - The Call to God's Promises
Isaiah 55:6-7 - The Call to Pursue God
Isaiah 55:8-11 - The Call to Perspective
Isaiah 55:12-13 - The Call to Prosperity
Isaiah 55:1-2 - The Call to Priorities (Abundant Life)
As stated in the introduction, people can be over-occupied with physical necessities and pleasures, or preoccupied with evil things, vain things, and phantasies. That which comes from God's Spirit / God's word is of lasting substance (Psalm 1:1-3; 119:11 cp. Ecclesiastes 1:1-11; Matthew 6:19-21). The things of God are free. Yet, they will cost you your time, attention, and devotion (Proverbs 23:23,26; I Timothy 4:12-16; Luke 12:15-32).
- Drink freely cp. John 4:10-14; 7:37-39; Revelation 22:17.
- Labor for the Bread that satisfies cp. John 6:26-29, 35; 10:7-10, 27-30.
- Make your soul fat (That's a good thing!) - Take care of your soul. Feed your soul. cp. Job 23:12; Matthew 6:33; 16:24-26; Psalm 1:1-3; 25:1-5; Romans 12:1-2; Ephesians 3:14-19; James 1:21; I Peter 2:1-3; II Peter 1:2-11; 3:18.
Isaiah 55:3-5 - The Call to God's Promises (The Sure Mercies of David)
Messiah will rise from the dead. By faith we will, too cp. Acts 13:33-34; Psalm 16:8-11; John 14:1-6, 15-26.
Messiah came for His people (Israel – See Matthew 2:1-6; John 1:11-14, 45-50). He is a witness to them of the truth of the gospel (John 18:37; Revelation 1:5). He is their leader and commander (Isaiah 9:6-7; 32:1-2). He also has a nation to build which will be Jew and Gentile (John 10:16; Romans 15:8-12; Galatians 6:15-16; Ephesians 2:11-22; I Peter 2:9-10).
The testimony of those who first believed and received the Messiah has been used of God to give us all a special relationship – a fellowship, a partnership with God the Father, His Son Jesus Christ, and with those others who believe on Him (I John 1:1-4; 2:1-2,19; 4:5-11; 5:19-21).
- Have you sought the Lord, in order to have the forgiveness of sins?
- Have you believed the truth of the Gospel story?
- Have you received the Lord Jesus Christ into your heart and begun this wonderful fellowship with Him?
- Do you enjoy the fellowship of the believers?
- Do you enjoy the benefits of God's word?
"Seek ye the Lord while He may be found, call ye upon Him while He is near."
(Isaiah 55:6)
